North America Academic Eligibility Definitions

Customers must meet one of the following criteria to be considered eligible for Academic pricing. Nuance will determine eligibility at its sole discretion.

Educational Entities

  1. Accredited* public or private primary, secondary, vocational or correspondence school providing full-time instruction for grades K-12 or a school district for such schools.
  2. Accredited* public or private university or college (including community, junior, scientific, technical or vocational college) that grants degrees requiring not less than the equivalent of two (2) years of full-time study.
  3. Administrative Offices & Boards of Education of Educational Institutions. Defined as (a) district, regional and state administrative offices of public Educational Institutions (b) administrative entities organized and operated exclusively for the administration of private Educational Institutions or (c) other state or local government entities nearly all of whose activities consist of administrative support, of a nature that advances academic learning, for public Educational Institutions.
  4. Government schools located in United States territories
  5. Home School Programs approved by Nuance in its sole discretion, which provide K-12 education to a student or students and is able to provide written proof that it a) belongs to a nationally recognized home schooling organization or b) is expressly recognized by a local school district as an acceptable alternative to an accredited or state recognized/approved education institution.
  6. Hospitals and Healthcare Systems that are wholly owned and operated by an accredited Educational Institution (see definitions above). “Wholly owned and operated" means that the Educational Institution is the sole owner of said hospital or health care system (including all of the organization’s assets) and the only entity exercising control over the hospital's day-to-day operations.

    To determine if an entity "wholly owned and operated" by an Educational Institution, the entity needs to be able to demonstrate and document evidence that they can answer "yes" to all four of the following questions:

    1. Does a Qualified Educational Institution, as defined in have complete financial responsibility for the entity in question?
    2. Is the entity solely governed by the same Board of Regents as a Qualified Educational Institution?
    3. Does a Qualified Educational Institution have the sole authority to hire and fire all employees of the entity?
    4. Does a Qualified Educational Institution have sole and final approval over policies and procedures of the entity?
  7. Higher education research laboratories that are a public institution and recognized by the Department of Education, teach students as part of their research mission, can provide copy of Bylaws that states the relationship with controlling university.

Examples of entities not eligible for academic pricing

  1. Non-accredited schools
  2. Hospitals not wholly owned and operated by an educational institution
  3. Churches
  4. Religious organizations that are not accredited schools
  5. Libraries
  6. Museums
  7. Military schools that do not grant academic degrees
  8. Training centers or schools granting certificates for courses such as computer software training
  9. Research laboratories not recognized by the Department of Education or laboratories qualified as Federally Funded Research and Development Centers or University Affiliated Research Centers.

*Accrediting Associations recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or in the case of public K12 institutions, recognized and/or approved by the Department of Education of the State in which it is located.

Individuals

  1. Full time or part time students enrolled accredited public or private university or college (including community, junior, scientific, technical or vocational college) that grants degrees requiring not less than the equivalent of two (2) years of fulltime study.
  2. Students enrolled in accredited public or private primary, secondary, vocational or correspondence school providing fulltime instruction.
  3. Full or part time faculty and staff employed by accredited K-12 and higher education institutions

Examples of individuals not eligible for academic pricing

  1. Full time or part time students not currently enrolled at an accredited K-12 or higher education institution.
  2. Full or part time faculty and staff not currently employed at an accredited K-12 or higher education institution.
  3. Students, faculty and staff who are not willing or able to provide appropriate Identification
  4. Students, faculty or staff enrolled or employed by hospitals and healthcare systems that are NOT wholly and operated by an accredited Educational Institution.
  5. Students, faculty or staff enrolled or employed by higher education research laboratories that are a public institution and recognized by the Department of Education.

Acceptable forms of identification

Individuals
  1. Clear, readable copies of the following documents: A current, valid photo identification and valid evidence of current enrollment at or employment by an accredited K12 or higher education institution. Examples include:
    1. School photo identification card that includes date validating current status; or
    2. School photo identification or drivers license or other official photo identification with corroborating evidence including but not limited to: faculty or staff pay check stubs; student course curriculums or tuition bill with a valid date and printed with the Educational Entity logo or seal; an official letter from the registrar of the Educational Entity; or
    3. For K-12 students only: when the above listed forms of identification is not available, an official letter from a teacher at the accredited K12 institution verifying the student's right to order software at academic prices
Educational Entities
  1. A valid, official purchase order issued by an Education Entity; or
  2. Current credit card information with the proper name, billing address, and 'ship to' or delivery address of the Educational Entity; or
  3. A current personal credit card or check payment from Individuals who are faculty or staff with a 'ship to' or delivery address of the Educational Entity
Academic Eligibility Definitions

"Educational Establishment" means:

  1. Any accredited public or private primary, secondary or higher education school providing fulltime education. This includes nursery schools, primary schools, secondary schools, high schools, grammar schools, schools for special needs, teacher training colleges, technical colleges, further education colleges, research institutes, adult education centers and subsidized facilities for the re-training of the unemployed.
  2. Administrative Offices or Boards of Education of Educational Establishments (for their own use).
  3. Home schools and tutoring schemes approved in writing by Nuance in its sole discretion.
  4. International School Communities
  5. Government funded / owned schools located in the Territory.
  6. Named educational entities approved by Nuance only if individual named entities are approved by Nuance in writing if not already listed by Nuance on its website.
    • Hospitals that are wholly owned and operated by an Educational Establishment. Wholly owned and operated means the Educational Establishment is sole owner of the hospital and only entity exercising control over day to day operations.
    • Education research laboratories that are a public establishment and recognized as such, teach students as part of their research mission, can provide copy of Bylaws that state the relationship with controlling university.
    • Educational Consortia, Councils and Systems: Corporations and associations validly organized and existing under the laws of the Territory, with each member or shareholder of which is an accredited school.

"Educational Individual" means

  1. A qualified individual who acquire the Products for their own personal use but not for further distribution or transfer and who have presented appropriate identification of current status as:
    • Students enrolled at an accredited public or private primary or secondary school providing full-time instruction
    • Full or part time students enrolled at Higher & Further Education Establishments defined as accredited public or private university or college that grants degrees requiring not less than the equivalent of two (2) years of full-time study
    • Full or part time faculty and staff employed by accredited Education Establishments
    • Other qualified examples as listed by Nuance from time to time on its Internet website or in other written communication
