Dragon Medical for VA Hospitals

Question: Dragon Medical does not seem to work right in the Add Comment to Consult window. For example, sometimes it doesn't capitalize the first word of a sentence, it leaves out the spaces between some words, and the "Select" command doesn't work reliably.

Answer: Dragon Medical treats the Add Comments to Consult window as a non-standard window. These are normal symptoms of working in a non-standard window. You can make Dragon Medical treat this window as a standard window by following these steps:

  1. If Dragon Medical is running, close it.
  2. Edit the file nsapps.ini, which is in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking10.
  3. Locate the section that begins with [.Global\Global Enable Class Names]
  4. Add the following line to this section: TCaptionMemo=1
  5. Save and close nsapps.ini, then restart Dragon Medical.

Question: Is it possible to make a voice command that adds a CPRS template to a note?

Answer: Not exactly. If the template consists only of text, you can duplicate it with a Dragon voice command — that is, copy the text and use it as the content of a Text & Graphics command. However, if the template includes fields or patient data objects, you cannot make a voice command that achieves the same result.

Question: How can you click the Templates or Reminders button with a voice command?

Answer: There is no ideal way, since Dragon NaturallySpeaking does not recognize these buttons as Windows buttons. The best way might be to build a custom command using the Macro Recorder that clicks the mouse on the button. If you build such a command to click the Templates button, it will not work when the Reminders pane is visible because the Templates button is no longer at its default location.

Question: Can you make a voice command that signs a note by typing in your electronic signature code?

Answer: Yes, but doing so is not recommended. If you built such a command, your electronic signature code would reside in your command file in plain-text form and could be retrieved by anyone with access to your user file. Whether this situation is permissible is a site-specific decision.

Question: Sometimes I say a command in CPRS, and nothing happens. What do I do?

Answer: Make sure CPRS has focus by clicking somewhere in CPRS, and then say the command again. Also ensure you have imported the CPRS commands into your user profile.
