Using Dragon NaturallySpeaking with Essentris

Dictating in Essentris

Dictation and Select-and-Say work in all of the free-text boxes of Essentris.

Note: The commands “new-line” and “new-paragraph” do not always do the same thing as pressing the Enter key once or twice. When you are in a clinical note, pressing Enter moves the cursor to the next field unless you first click the Edit Note button. However, saying “new-line” inserts a line break into the note, and “new-paragraph” inserts two line breaks, even if you have not clicked Edit Note.

Navigating in Essentris

You can say the names of menus (such as File or Edit), commands on menus, and buttons in dialog boxes (such as OK or Cancel).

You cannot say the names of most of the buttons on the toolbars, but you can import commands that perform the functions of almost all of the toolbar buttons. See "Dragon NaturallySpeaking Commands for Essentris" below.

To choose an item in a drop-down list, dictate the first word or several words, then say “tab.” Essentris will fill in the rest of the line.

To choose a note from the list on the Notes Menu Screen, you can say a command that is equivalent to the down-arrow key (“move down 1,” "move down 2," etc.) or dictate the time of the note.

To click check boxes in a template, it is not practical to use voice commands. You can say "tab" repeatedly until you reach the desired checkbox and then say “space,” but this is cumbersome.

Building a Command to Create a Note of a Specific Type

The command set for Essentris includes two sample commands that create specific notes: New Med Reconciliation Worksheet and New HIPAA Advance Directives. These commands are active in the Notes Menu Screen, and are not recognized as commands in any other screen or window. You can make commands to create other types of notes by copying and modifying one of these samples.

After you import the commands as described in the section Dragon NaturallySpeaking Commands for Essentris above, you can follow these steps:

  1. If Dragon NaturallySpeaking is not running, start it and open your user file.
  2. If the Command Browser is not on the screen, click Tools, Command Browser. Wait for the Command Browser window to appear.
  3. Click Script.
  4. In the Grammar: drop-down list, choose CciCsPatctrlClient – Notes Menu Screen.
  5. Select New Med Reconciliation Worksheet by clicking its name.
  6. Click New Copy. The MyCommands Editor window appears, with a new command called “New Med Reconciliation Worksheet 2.”

  8. In the script at the bottom of the window, change “Med Reconciliation Worksheet” to the type of note you want to create, for example “History & Physical.” This text must exactly match the note type as it is displayed in Essentris. (Note that the single-quote and the text following it on that line are ignored; this is a comment.) Your command might look like the example below.
  9. Click Save.
