Keeping Drivers Safely Connected on the Road
Mobile phones have become an integral part of daily lives. With jam-packed schedules and long to-do lists, people want to take advantage of in-car time to keep in touch and get things done over the phone. With Nuance, drivers can stay connected — and safe — while driving. Our easy-to-use communications solutions, including hands-free voice dialing, caller announcement, and SMS reading, reduce driver distraction while operating mobile phones. Drivers can dial a number, answer a phone call or listen to incoming text message without taking their hands off the wheel or their eyes off the road. Nuance communication solutions enables drivers to make productive use of commuting time — without compromising safety or convenience.
Hands-Free Voice Dialing
Nuance’s solutions enable hands-free voice dialing of mobile phones for safer operation behind the wheel. No more looking up contacts and pressing button. These solutions support the following functions to help drivers stay focused on the road:
Name Dialing: By synchronizing the mobile phone with the hands-free unit in the car, the application will download the driver’s entire address book and allow him to place a call just by speaking a name. The system can even accommodate phone books containing thousands of names in different languages. There’s no need to create voice tags or train the system to recognize names.
Number Dialing: The driver can also dictate a phone number in any way — speaking the whole number in one utterance, speaking single digits, or speaking chunks of digits. No matter how the number is spoken, the system delivers consistently high accuracy in recognizing numbers.
Caller Announcement
Using Nuance’s natural, multilingual text-to-speech technology, the Caller Announcement application reads out the name of the person placing an in-coming call. This way, the driver is able to decide whether or not to answer the call without having to look at the Caller ID on the mobile phone display. The benefit? Drivers can selectively answer calls while keeping their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. That’s a safety feature we can all appreciate.
SMS Reading
Texting is all the rage, but it’s a distracting and potentially dangerous activity to engage in while driving. How can drivers receive text messages and still stay safe behind the wheel? Nuance’s advanced text-to-speech technology reads out incoming messages aloud to the driver in a pleasant and highly intelligible voice. But what about all those abbreviations, acronyms and emoticons? Not a problem. Vocalizer for Automotive’s text normalization can handle all kinds of messaging peculiarities so even common texting jargon is read out correctly.
