ScanSoft and Fujitsu Announce New Bundling Agreement

Fujitsu Will Now Bundle Pagis Pro 3.0 and OmniPage Web With New Workgroup Color Scanners

PEABODY, Mass., - May 23, 2000 - ScanSoft, Inc. (NASDAQ: SSFT) and Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. announced today a licensing agreement to bundle Pagis Pro 3.0 Scanning Suite™ with the new ScanPartner® 3091DC, a versatile, high-volume desktop duplex color scanner. Fujitsu is also licensing ScanSoft's OmniPage Web™ paper-to-web software with the new ScanPartner 620C, an economical, workgroup scanner that offers the industry's highest color scanning speeds. The new OEM relationship is the latest in a series of strategic agreements designed to extend ScanSoft's presence into larger corporate markets. This relationship also allows Fujitsu customers to benefit from ScanSoft's leading digital imaging technology. Unlike most bundled software, which is often light or limited, Pagis Pro 3.0 Scanning Suite and OmniPage Web are full-featured products, offering customers full-functionality.

"Both the ScanPartner 3091DC and 620C deliver true color support and unparalleled image quality, ideal for ScanSoft's document imaging and web publishing applications," said Victor Kan, director of product management, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. "ScanSoft's award-winning Pagis Pro and OmniPage Web enable our users to make the most of their scanner."

"The new Fujitsu ScanPartner workgroup scanners will expose many new corporate customers to ScanSoft digital imaging software," said Wayne Crandall, ScanSoft's senior vice president of sales and business development. "This relationship is another example of ScanSoft's movement into the corporate and departmental markets."

Pagis Pro 3.0 Scanning Suite offers four integrated scanning programs designed to streamline the process of using, sharing and managing information on a PC and the Internet. The suite includes TextBridge® Pro 9.0 and enhanced Pagis® document management software.

  • TextBridge Pro 9.0 OCR software enables users to quickly turn paper documents into electronic files without retyping. Plus, TextBridge Pro 9.0 retains the layout and formatting of the original document, including color photos. Users can also turn scanned files into formatted web pages.
  • Pagis turns the Windows Explorer into a visual filing system by creating visual thumbnails for scanned documents, photos, application files and web pages. Digital images are easily integrated with popular desktop applications or shared via e-mail.
  • Pagis Copier turns a scanner and color printer into a color copier. With the push of a button, Pagis Copier automatically scans and prints a color copy. Pagis Copier provides a familiar copier interface along with many options, such as resizing, reduce to fit, collate and color output.
  • Pagis Forms Fill-In alleviates the time-consuming task of filling out forms on a typewriter or by hand. With Pagis Forms Fill-In, users simply scan the form and tab and type. The result is a professional-looking form.

OmniPage Web gives Fujitsu customers the ability to build a web site right out of the box. The software quickly and easily converts multi-page paper documents into intelligently structured, hyperlinked web sites. OmniPage Web's Logical Structure Recognition™ (LSR) technology recognizes the outline, hierarchy and structural elements of scanned pages and can then generate full sets of HTML pages. OmniPage Web offers all levels of HTML support from plain text through Dynamic HTML (DHTML). The product also supports Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), which the user may elect to use. CSS is an advanced style-based HTML standard that improves speed of loading and ease-of-maintenance for webmasters. OmniPage Web automatically generates a table of contents where each entry is a hyperlink to the appropriate section of the web site. A navigation panel is also generated at the top and/or bottom of each web page, which the user can choose to represent with text links, their own graphics, or icons provided in OmniPage Web.
