ScanSoft to Present at Boston Security Analysts Society on March 13

PEABODY, Mass., March 6, 2002 - ScanSoft, Inc. (Nasdaq: SSFT), a leading supplier of digital imaging, speech and language solutions, will present at the first small-cap breakfast meeting program hosted by The Boston Security Analysts Society (BSAS) on Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at The Bay Tower, 60 State Street, Boston from 7:15 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Chairman and CEO Paul Ricci and Chief Financial Officer Rich Palmer will discuss ScanSoft's growth strategy and opportunities for its digital imaging business and its recently acquired speech and language technologies business. To register, BSAS members and their guests should contact Alyssa Drosdik at 617-426-0270, ext. 7 or adrosdik@bsas.org by March 11.

ScanSoft's portfolio of solutions contains the world's most recognized information capture and speech products, including OmniPage® Pro optical character recognition, PaperPort® personal document management, OmniForm® eForm management, Dragon NaturallySpeaking® speech recognition and RealSpeak™ text-to-speech. Collectively, these products automate a range of manual processes to help consumers, professionals and enterprises save time, increase productivity and improve customer service. In December 2001, ScanSoft acquired substantially all the operating and technology assets of the Speech and Language Technologies business of Lernout & Hauspie (L&H).

For the full year 2001, ScanSoft reported total revenues of $63.9 million, up 30 percent from revenues of $49.1 million in 2000. Net income was $10.6 million, or $0.19 per share, versus a net loss of $7.6 million, or $0.18 per share, a year ago. In both years, results exclude amortization of acquisition-related intangibles and, in 2000, the effect of a restructuring charge. After including these items, ScanSoft reported a net loss of $16.9 million, or $0.34 per share, for 2001 compared with a net loss of $53.3 million, or $1.26 per share, for 2000.

"As a company with roots in Boston, we are pleased to have this opportunity to share our exciting growth story with the city's investment community through this important venue," said Paul Ricci, ScanSoft's chairman and CEO.

With a registered user base exceeding 10 million individuals and corporate customers including AOL/Time Warner, Microsoft and Sony, ScanSoft's cutting-edge imaging and speech technologies are among the most pervasive in the world. The company also has strategic relationships with the world's leading manufacturers of multi-function devices, including Canon, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, Lexmark and Xerox, and maintains partnerships with many of the industry's biggest users of speech and voice technology.
