inData Selects ScanSoft Capture Development System to Add Sophisticated Scanning and OCR Capabilities to TrialDirector Suite

Rapid Application Development, Highly Accurate OCR, Plus Native Support for PDF Puts ScanSoft Imaging and Capture Development Tools Ahead of Competition

PEABODY, Mass., August 27, 2002 - ScanSoft, Inc. (Nasdaq: SSFT), a leading supplier of imaging, speech and language solutions, announced today that inData Corporation, a leading provider of trial presentation software, has selected the ScanSoft® Capture Development System to quickly add sophisticated scanning, document imaging and optical character recognition (OCR) capabilities to the inData TrialDirector Suite of products.

Formerly called the Developers Kit 2000, the ScanSoft Capture Development System provides application developers with an extensible way to add high-volume document imaging and capture capabilities to commercial, OEM and in-house applications. The ScanSoft Capture Development System includes high-level interfaces for scanning, OCR, ICR, OMR and barcode recognition, as well as complete input and output support for PDF, TIFF and a range of document formats. Pre-made user interface components are also provided, including scanner interfaces, image correction and image pre-processing controls.

The TrialDirector Suite of products includes DocumentDirector, which uses the ScanSoft Capture Development System to quickly scan and organize documents that will be used in legal proceedings, and CaseOCR, which uses ScanSoft's highly accurate OCR technology to automatically create search index information from scanned paper and digital images. CaseOCR provides attorneys with the ability to automate the indexing, processing and electronic filing of case documents, delivering significant time and cost savings when compared to manual filing and data entry. The application uses ScanSoft's full-page OCR to create accurate search indexes for litigation documents, and supports the simultaneous processing of documents on networked systems, achieving a throughput of over 10,000 pages per hour.

"By relying on ScanSoft's document imaging and OCR toolkits we get the best possible scanning and OCR capabilities, allowing us to focus almost all of our engineering efforts on features that are important to the legal community," said Brent Sandstrom, CEO for inData Corporation. "With ScanSoft as a partner, we are confident that our application will always have the best imaging capabilities available."

The ScanSoft Capture Development System, which is based upon the imaging technology within ScanSoft's market-leading OmniPage Pro product, supports developing 32-bit applications using C, Microsoft Visual C++, Visual Basic and ActiveX programming tools. The Capture Development System has complete support for importing, converting and creating PDF files, including image only and image plus text. It also includes 10 powerful recognition engines, which can be used individually or in concert. These include zone- and full-page Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for document indexing and conversion, Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) for processing handprint information, as well as recognition capabilities for remittance processing and bar code data capture. Its ActiveX interface and controls for image viewing, zone control and text editing reduce development time by delivering pre-made user interface components to application developers.

"The ScanSoft Capture Development System combines OCR accuracy with a powerful set of rapid development tools, giving developers an easy way to add sophisticated imaging capabilities to their applications," said Wayne Crandall, senior vice president of Sales and Business Developoment at ScanSoft. "By combining ScanSoft's award-winning imaging technology with their leading trial presentation solutions, inData is able to empower their customers with the tools needed to win their cases."
