ScanSoft Delivers Voice Commands in Latest Tom Clancy Release Exclusively for PlayStation® 2
Peabody, Mass. and Ghent, Belgium November 24, 2003 - ScanSoft, Inc. (Nasdaq: SSFT), the leading supplier of speech and imaging solutions, today announced that Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, has incorporated ScanSoft's embedded speech recognition software into its upcoming PlayStation® 2 release, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon : Jungle Storm. Available early in the first quarter of 2004, Jungle Storm is the first title in the Ghost Recon series to incorporate voice commands, and it will be exclusively available for the PlayStation® 2 computer entertainment system.
Ubisoft Studio in France has licensed ScanSoft's Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) 1600 speech recognition software for German, Italian, French, Spanish, and U.K. and U.S. English languages to provide up to 160 voice commands that enable gamers to communicate with online teammates, give orders to computer-controlled members of the team, and interact through speech recognition with the game itself.
"ScanSoft's dedicated speech recognition software for the PlayStation 2 enables us to provide consumers with an exciting dimension that brings new meaning to the idea of an interactive gaming experience," said Vincent Greco, Producer of Jungle Storm, Ubisoft. "As a technology partner, ScanSoft's solution is of the utmost quality and has also proved easy to integrate. The emergence of speech recognition software in games like Jungle Storm marks the beginning of a new generation of games that will ultimately provide a new level of entertainment for gamers."
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm is one of the first in a new generation of games and applications that use the power of speech recognition to provide advanced command and control of the gaming environment, as well as real-life interaction for gaming enthusiasts.
"We are very encouraged by the recent acceleration of the use of speech in games. Speech adds a new and exciting modality for users to interact with games, and game developers around the world are responding to this excitement," said Alan Schwartz, General Manager of Embedded Speech Solutions for ScanSoft. "Our Games SDK provides a convenient way for developers to develop speech-enabled games to meet that demand for adding speech to games."
