ScanSoft Asserts Its Key Intellectual Property for Voice-Activated Dialing on Mobile Devices; Files Patent Infringement Lawsuit against ART Technologies

U.S. Patent Covers Voice-Activated Dialing for Mobile Devices; Strategic Component of ScanSoft's Speech Portfolio for Embedded Markets

PEABODY, Mass., April 28, 2004 - ScanSoft, Inc. (NASDAQ: SSFT), the leading supplier of speech and imaging solutions, today announced that it has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against ART Advanced Recognition Technologies, Inc. in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

In its complaint, ScanSoft states that ART Advanced Recognition Technologies, Inc. infringes a ScanSoft patent that covers voice-activated dialing for mobile telephones. In the claim, ScanSoft seeks monetary damages for infringement and injunctive relief to prevent ART from continuing to infringe U.S. Patent No. 6,501,966 "Speech Recognition System for Electronic Switches in a Non-Wireline Communications Network." "ScanSoft has an obligation to its stakeholders to protect its intellectual property and patent portfolio," said Jo-Anne Sinclair, vice president and general counsel for ScanSoft. "Since its founding, ScanSoft has invested significant costs and resources to develop and acquire leading technologies, techniques and associated intellectual property that differentiate us from the competition. Those inventions and the intellectual property protecting those inventions are a cornerstone of our business. We take great pride in and place significant value on our patents and will aggressively protect our intellectual property rights through all available means."

In related announcement, ScanSoft today announced a new relationship in the mobile device market through a partnership with Infinity Telecom. See today's announcement, "ScanSoft and Infinity Telecom Partner to Offer Speech Applications for Mobile Devices."
