Nuance Mobile Speech Solutions Take Center Stage at 3GSM World Congress

Nuance to be Showcased in 25 Partner and Customer Booths, Presence Demonstrates Pervasive Speech Growth Across Mobile Industry

3GSM World Congress 2007, BARCELONA, Spain, February 12, 2007 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) today announced that its speech solutions will be used to power the mobile industry’s latest devices, applications and services in partner and customer booths across the show floor at the 3GSM World Congress 2007, taking place this week in Barcelona, Spain. With Nuance speech solutions behind the products of more than 25 vendors at 3GSM, the show is the latest indication of how speech has penetrated a variety of new markets.

The explosion of the global mobile industry has created an increased demand for a more natural way to interact with mobile devices and services. Nuance has quickly responded with speech-enabled solutions based on its fully developed set of core speech technologies. Whether embedded on the device or distributed on the network, speech technologies from Nuance provide a solution to traditional mobile constraints such as small keyboards and tiny screens.

“The show floor at 3GSM provides a snapshot of just how pervasive our speech solutions have become,” said Steve Chambers, president, speech division, Nuance. “This is a market that has enormous growth potential. With more than 2.5 billion cell phones in use, and about five percent using speech recognition, we see an enormous untapped market. Similarly, speech recognition for navigation systems and other mobile devices and services opens additional markets for millions of users.”

Through its presence in customer/partner booths and its own demonstrations, Nuance will highlight the innovative ways speech can be used as a natural and effective interface to address a range of typical tasks for the mobile user:

  • Mobile Search and Communications: Nuance will be on hand in the Palm and Research in Motion pavilions, demonstrating the latest smartphones with Nuance Voice Control, a speech-enabled mobile search and messaging service. The service allows users to easily dictate and send email or text messages, create calendar entries, dial a contact, and search the Web for business listings, news, weather, stock quotes, sport scores and more.

  • Hands-Free Dialing: Through its portfolio of embedded speech recognition applications, Nuance is currently available on more than 50 million handsets, many of which will be on display at the show.

  • Navigation Devices and Services: The latest personal navigation devices include Nuance speech technology for speech-enabled directions and control. In addition, Nuance powers automotive solutions from suppliers such as Bury and Analog Devices, to allow drivers to handle various communications, driving and entertainment tasks in cars from Ford, Infiniti, BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Fiat, Nissan, Renault, Toyota and many others. Leaders in phone-based mapping and traffic solutions, such as TeleNav and Navteq, leverage speech solutions to enable voice destination for navigation services.

  • Voice-Controlled MP3 Player Applications: More than 40 percent of the phones on the market today include MP3 playing capabilities, allowing users to store and play hundred of songs. Nuance’s speech-controlled MP3 provides a simple voice-activated interface to select a song, an artist or a playlist.

  • Mobile Operators: Speech-enabled applications allow wireless subscribers to access their personal or public address books, calendar and a range of information services using simple speech commands. Users can also request sports and lottery results, download ringtones, picture messages and logos, utilize location-based services to find the nearest amenities, recommended restaurants, etc. Customers at 3GSM include Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone.

  • Enhanced Access to Handset Features for Blind and Low-Vision Users Hundreds of millions of visually impaired people around the world cannot fully leverage the basic functions available now in all mobile phones, like caller ID and text messaging. The Nuance Accessibility Suite, with its screen reader and magnification capabilities, offers a simple and effective solution. Organizations such as Wayfinder will be demonstrating speech-enabled applications for the blind at 3GSM.

Enrich the Mobile Experience at the Nuance 3GSM Booth

In addition to the partner and customer solutions on display at the event, Nuance will demonstrate new speech solutions in the Nuance booth (Hall 2, Booth 2H48). New products include the Nuance Mobile Speech Platform, which allows users to speak natural queries in order to find ringtones, locate the nearest flower shop, search the Web, or dictate a complete SMS or email without touching the keypad. In addition, Nuance will demonstrate new embedded speech solutions that help users to quickly access all key functions on the handset, command the phone’s MP3 player or even have incoming content -- such as an SMS, email or on-screen directions – read back using Nuance’s latest text-to-speech technology.

Nuance will present a theater session on Tuesday, February 13 from 15:00 to 16:00. Michael Thompson, vice president and general manager, telco, search and communications, Nuance, will present “Elevate the Mobile Experience with Speech,” detailing the ways Nuance is redefining the mobile experience. Nuance will also host a cocktail hour on Tuesday from 17:30 to 19:00 in the Nuance booth, offering conference attendees the opportunity to meet Nuance executives and experience the latest speech products in a relaxed setting. In addition, conference attendees can test their text messaging speed and skills at the Nuance booth by competing in the “The Mobile Challenge: You vs. Nuance” to win exciting prizes.
