Nuance Lets Drivers Dictate Destinations with the Latest TomTom GO Portable Navigation Devices

Powered by Nuance Speech Technology, Navigating with a TomTom GO Becomes Faster, Safer and Easier

BURLINGTON, Mass., Nov. 27, 2007 -- Nuance Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: NUAN), a leading provider of speech and imaging solutions, is leveraging the power of voice to control everyday devices, including the newest versions of TomTom’s award-winning GO portable navigation devices. Most existing navigation systems can be difficult to use while driving as the driver either has to stop the vehicle to manually input the destination or have a passenger enter the information. With voice destination entry from Nuance, drivers using the newest TomTom devices can keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road and simply speak their destination. The new TomTom GO 920 and GO 920T with Nuance® voice destination entry are available now in retailers across the U.S. and Canada.

The TomTom GO portable navigation systems with Nuance’s voice solutions make the perfect gift for the holidays: moms, dads, college students, new drivers and even grandparents will see the value and added safety of using speech technology in lieu of fumbling with small keypads to input an address while driving.

“Innovation balanced with an attention to safety and convenience drive our development of speech technologies that improve the daily lives of consumers,” said Steve Chambers, president, Mobility and Consumer Services at Nuance. “Our latest development with TomTom is hitting the mark with portable navigation systems that utilize voice commands to get users to their destination safely and with less hassle. The new TomTom GO 920 and GO 920T make perfect holiday gifts -- especially for those that like to have the most recent gadgets as soon as they are available.”

A recent survey commissioned by Nuance confirmed strong demand for voice destination entry and other speech-enabled features for personal navigation systems. As part of this study, nearly 1,000 drivers across Germany, Japan and the United States described their preferences for in-car features and assessed a range of voice-based functions. More than 75 percent of drivers confirmed that they enter or change their destination while on the road. In addition, more than 70 percent of survey respondents believed that controlling navigation systems by voice increased safety and improved the overall user experience of the navigation system.
