Nuance Enables Voice Recognition in Electronic Dictionary App That Translates Japanese to English or Chinese

22, 2008 – Nuance Communications, Inc., a leading provider
of speech solutions, today announced that it powers the speech recognition
capabilities of BB Softservice Corp’s SoftBank SELECTION Speeek!
application for the Apple iPhone™ 3G. Speeek! is a voice-enabled
electronic dictionary application that translates Japanese to English
or Chinese.
BB Softservice’s Speeek! application leverages Nuance’s voice
recognition software to ensure high-accuracy and rich vocabulary recognition
to translate Japanese phrases into English or Chinese. Speeek! contains
approximately 1,500 phrases corresponding to eight situations, including
navigating an airport, staying in a hotel, eating in a restaurant, seeking
transportation, sightseeing, basic conversations, and other phrases. When
users speak Japanese phrases into their iPhone 3G, potential sentences are
searched and displayed that users can then simply select. The application
speaks the full translation back to the user, and provides potential replies
the user might expect during the course of the conversation.
Nuance’s speech recognition powers voice command in a variety of automotive,
personal navigation and mobile applications, and was chosen by BB Softservice
for its accuracy and speed in addition to its support for more than 20 languages
worldwide.
