Samsung to Ship Nuance's T9 and XT9 on New Phones Worldwide
Extended Multi-Year Partnership to Bring Nuance’s Predictive Text to Millions of Samsung Phones around the Globe
Burlington, MA, December 14, 2009 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) today announced that Samsung, a leading mobile phone provider, has extended its relationship with Nuance to ship T9 and XT9 predictive text input products across Samsung’s global portfolio of mobile phones. Nuance’s T9 and XT9 are the industry’s most widely adopted predictive text technologies that make it faster and easier for consumers to send text messages and emails, and quickly type URLs via any keypad format, including standard and touchscreen 12-key and QWERTY keypads.
As a result of this renewed partnership, Samsung will provide innovative predictive text capabilities to a broad range of consumers in all of its markets, as T9 and XT9 support more than 80 languages. Samsung is able to feature Nuance’s innovative predictive text capabilities on any of its mobile handsets, including those based on Samsung’s own operating systems and others such as Android, Windows Mobile and Symbian. Today, T9 and XT9 are already featured on some of Samsung’s most popular models around the world to provide the best possible messaging experience.
“Our global consumers demand innovation in messaging, so anything we can do to make it faster and easier for them is a key dimension of our phone design strategy,” said Hyoungmoon No, vice president, R&D Planning Team, Samsung Electronics. “This expanded relationship with Nuance ultimately enables our broad consumer base to send messages and emails in half the time, quickly enter URLs, and more, on any phone we bring to market.”
With Nuance’s T9 and XT9, mobile users can take full advantage of their phone’s messaging capabilities, and write text messages and emails more quickly and easily. Users can easily switch between input modes and alternate between numbers, letters, symbols, and languages. XT9 features word correction and automatic word completion, which help reduce common misspellings due to small key sizes on traditional and touchscreen QWERTY keyboards. XT9 also enables users to quickly enter URLs on phones that feature an HTML Web browser.
“Samsung brings innovative phone after innovative phone to market, and we are thrilled to expand our relationship and offer our predictive text solutions to its broad consumer base,” said Michael Thompson, senior vice president and general manager, Nuance Mobile. “We understand the messaging demands that leading global handset manufacturers like Samsung face, so we’re continuously innovating our predictive text input solutions to support any device brought to market, in more than 80 languages worldwide.”
T9 and XT9 are part of Nuance’s broad mobile portfolio that features the industry’s most pervasive mobile speech and predictive input solutions that are changing the way consumers interact with their mobile phones to send text messages and email, place calls, and access the mobile Web for information, directions, music and more. Nuance’s mobile solutions ship on more than four billion handsets — a result of its extensive relationships with every major mobile OEM and carriers around the world.
