The MyCommands Editor, Text and Graphics dialog box

Use the MyCommands Editor, Text and Graphics dialog box to create commands that enter text and graphics of your choosing. (Open the Editor by selecting Tools > Add New Command from the New DragonBar or Classic DragonBar or by clicking the command name in the Command Browser.) Creating custom commands is useful for carrying out repetitive routine tasks such as entering addresses, a company logo, or a signature graphic.

MyCommand Name

The name of the command. This is what you will say to execute the command. You can click the Train button to teach Dragon how you pronounce this name. If you enter an angle bracket (<), the software interprets this as the beginning of a variable. The MyCommands Name Editor dialog box will then open so you can specify the variable. For limitations on the MyCommand name see the topic on the MyCommands Name Editor dialog box.

Description

A short description of what the command does (optional).

Group

A list containing the categories in which you can place the command. You use these categories to locate the command in the Command Browser. In this edition of Dragon, only User-defined is available. Note that the Group list can only be modified in Dragon Professional, Legal, and Medical Editions.

A list containing the categories in which you can place the command. You use these categories to locate the command in the Command Browser. By default, the groups Samples, Dragon, and User-defined are available. To create your own group, select User-defined and type over it with a group name of your choosing.

Availability

Where the command will be available.

  • Global: The command will be available in every application.
  • Application-specific: The command will be available in the application you specify. When you select this option, the applications currently open appear in a list. If the application you want is not open, use the Browse button to locate the application on your computer.
  • Window-specific: The command will be available in the window you specify. When you select this option, the Application and Window lists appear. If the application or window you want is not in the list, you must close the MyCommands Editor, Text and Graphics dialog box, open the application or window you want, and reopen the MyCommands Editor, Text and Graphics dialog box to see the window listed.

When you select either the Application-specific or Window-specific option, the Recognizable in States list appears. You can either select from the list or enter the name of a new state. A command with this option will be available in the state you specify within the window or application you specify.

Command Type

The command type, in this case, Text and Graphics. There are three other types of commands:

Name Editor

Click this button to open the MyCommands Name Editor dialog box. Use this dialog box to assign variables to your command such as a name for the command you want to create. Refer to the Help topic on the MyCommands Name Editor dialog box for more information.

Content

What you want entered when you say the command name. This can be text, graphics, or a combination (graphics must be pasted into this box from other applications). See Variable below to insert a Voice Field for a variable into the content of the command.

Toolbar

Use the tools in the toolbar to format text in the Content box as you want it to appear when you say the command name. You can also use keyboard shortcuts, such as CTRL-b for formatting.

Variable

To insert a Voice Field (variable field) in the MyCommand, click the "Variable" button below the Content box. Voice Fields are variable fields where the user can later type or dictate a specific value.

You should see the delimiting characters for a Voice (variable) Field appear, with the words "default value" between them. If you changed the delimiting characters on The Options dialog box Commands tab, you should see the new delimiters that you set.

For more information, see Using Dragon Templates with Voice Fields with Text and Graphics commands.

Plain Text

Select this check box if you want the contents to be entered in the same font style and size as the text preceding it in the document.

Save

Click Save to save the Text and Graphics command. Note that this button is not available until you give the command a name before.

Cancel

Click Cancel to close the Text and Graphics dialog box without saving any changes you have made since you last clicked Save.

Create New

Click Create New to open the Text and Graphics dialog box with a duplicate of the current command. You can rename and edit the command to create a new command.

Note that this button is active only when you open the editor from the Script area of the Command Browser by selecting a command and clicking Edit.

Notes

  • Text and Graphics commands create rich text (.RTF) that includes formatting information that you specify. Programs that cannot accept .RTF format text, such as Notepad, will only show a plain text version of the command's contents.
  • Using Text and Graphics commands to paste from the Windows Clipboard does not work for all windows. The alternative is to use Step-by-Step commands or Advanced Scripting commands.
  • If the name of a Text and Graphics command contains one or more lists, you can refer to the names of the lists in the command itself with the <<list-name>> syntax. When you execute a command of this type, all instances of <<list-name>> will be substituted by the spoken values of the appropriate list. This makes the Text and Graphics commands behave dynamically, depending on the spoken command.
  • If a Text and Graphics command contains more than one list with the same content, the lists must have unique names or the command will be unable to distinguish between the lists.
