To send a photo via fax, most people begin by making a photocopy of the original, then put the copy through the machine. This usually results in a muddy, difficult to decipher image at the other end. A much better way is to install an inexpensive fax modem in your personal computer, then use your scanner as the input device. Enhance your image before you send it, and then apply a diffusion dither (at 100 or 150dpi) before you send the image. The resulting fax will come through much more cleanly.

A worldwide web page with nothing but text doesn't garner much attention these days. To liven up your URL, scan in photos that relate to the subject of your page and use them to accent the material in the text. As long as you use them at small sizes and at low (4-bit or 8-bit) color depths, they won't take too long to download and they will add personality to your pages.

Whether you're selling a house or a car, or just trying to give away your cat's kittens, a picture of what you're offering can do a great job of generating interest. Scan in photos and add them to the flyers you're posting, or to the information sheets at an open house. Potential buyers will remember you longer when they already have an image in their mind.
