Cool Things - Record Keeping

Prepare for disaster

Important documents are easy to lose and hard to replace. While you have them in one place, scan your savings bonds, deeds, and other documents and store all the images on a single disk or cartridge. You can store this disk away from the originals and be able to print copies easily if disaster should ever strike.

Insure your claim

If you're ever unfortunate enough to suffer fire or theft, you'll appreciate having good documentation when the insurance adjuster comes around. One way to make sure you have adequate records is to scan in photos of your possessions and store them away with notes about the item and its condition. With small items like jewelry, you can lay things right on the bed of a flatbed scanner and skip the photography altogether. Having a picture of something you lost can be very useful in settling disagreements about its existence or condition.
