Physicians Document More Complete and Accurate Patient Stories that Comply with ICD-10
BURLINGTON, MA, March 7, 2016 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) today announced that Kootenai Health has implemented Nuance Dragon® Medical speech recognition and Dragon Medical Advisor computer-assisted physician documentation (CAPD) to improve physician adoption and compliance with ICD-10 through more accurate, real time clinical documentation that supports better transitions of care.
“For us, the biggest benefit of using Nuance Dragon Medical solutions is that we can now get complete information in the patient’s record in real time, and provide access to anyone who might need it. This is imperative for improving the transition of care,” says Dr. Stephanie Lahr, chief medical information officer. “To get employees to use it and maximize physician satisfaction, we wanted the tools to be loved and embraced.”
Previously, Kootenai Health struggled with inefficient processes, delays in getting information into the electronic health record (EHR), and low physician engagement and satisfaction with documentation changes needed in order to comply with ICD-10 codes.
Physicians dictate notes directly into the EHR using Dragon Medical and then Dragon Medical Advisor analyzes the patient charts, and suggests appropriate ways to provide additional specificity or detail. This cloud-based solution leverages Nuance Clinical Language Understanding (CLU) technology to provide immediate feedback on what physicians can improve in clinical notes to support ICD-10 compliance and reduce post-discharge queries.
The Nuance solution exceeded expectations by providing a “best-of-both-worlds” approach. “In the past, traditional approaches may have been good at providing a narrative, but not real data for the system. On the other hand, structured notes could offer data, but had no way of capturing the full story,” explains Dr. Lahr. “The Nuance solution really is a win-win. It gives physicians a better way to document their full patient narrative while still creating a great record for future use.”
