Working with user profiles

A user profile is a set of files that Dragon uses to process what you say. Your user profile stores information, like the type of microphone you use, custom words, and vocabularies.

This topic describes non-Roaming user profiles. For information on working with Roaming user profiles, see Working with Roaming user profiles.

To upgrade your user profile:

For information on upgrading your Roaming user profiles, see Working with Roaming user profiles.

If you upgraded automatically, Dragon upgrades your user profiles the first time you open them after upgrading Dragon. If you chose not to upgrade your profiles, you can upgrade them later by selecting Dragon Medical Practice Edition>Dragon Medical Practice Edition Tools>Upgrade User Profiles (Windows 7) or Dragon Medical Practice Edition>Upgrade User Profiles (Windows 8.1 and 10) from the Windows Start menu.

To reset your user profile:

Do the following to reset your user profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Settings>Profile>Reset.

    A prompt appears.

  2. Click Yes.

To create a new user profile:

Do one of the following:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Settings>Profile>New User Profile.

    The New User Profile dialog box opens.

  2. Click New.

    The New User wizard opens.

  3. Run through the wizard.

    For more information, click the Help button on each screen.

  1. From the DragonBar, select Settings>Profile>Manage User Profiles.

    The Manage User Profiles dialog box opens.

  2. Click New.

    The New User wizard opens.

  3. Run through the wizard.

To open a different user profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Settings>Profile>Open User Profile.

    The Open User Profile dialog box opens.

  2. Select a user profile.
  3. Optionally select the Load this profile when Dragon starts option. This profile becomes your default user profile

  4. Click Open.

    Dragon closes your current user profile and opens the new one.

To select a default user profile:

Your default user profiles open automatically when you open Dragon.

You can have one profile per language and region.

  1. From the DragonBar, select one of the following:

    • Settings>Profile>Open User Profile
    • Settings>Profile>Manage User Profiles

    The Open User Profile or Manage User Profiles dialog box opens.

  2. Select a user profile.
  3. Select the Load this profile when Dragon starts check box.

  4. Close the dialog box.

To close your user profile:

From the DragonBar, select Settings>Profile>Close User Profile.

To delete a user profile:

Do the following to delete your user profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Settings>Profile>Manage User Profiles.

    The Manage User Profiles dialog box opens.

  2. Select a user profile.

    You cannot delete the current user profile. To delete it, you must first open a different user profile.

  3. Click Delete.
  4. Click Yes.

To rename a user profile:

Do the following to rename your user profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Settings>Profile>Manage User Profiles.

    The Manage User Profiles dialog box opens.

  2. Select a user profile.

  3. Click Rename.

    The Rename User Profile dialog box opens.

  4. Specify a new name, and then click OK.

To save your user profile:

Dragon saves your user profile automatically when you exit. You might save your user profile manually if, for example, you just added many new words to your vocabulary.

From the DragonBar, select Settings>Profile>Save.

Do the following to save your user profile:

From the DragonBar, select Settings>Profile>Save User Profile.

To view user profile properties:

  1. From the DragonBar, select one of the following:

    • Settings>Profile>Manage User Profiles
    • Settings>Profile>Open User Profile

    The Manage User Profiles dialog box or the Open User Profile dialog box opens.

  2. Select a user profile.
  3. Click Properties.

    The User Profile Properties dialog box opens.

To add a vocabulary to your user profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Settings>Profile>Add vocabulary to the current User Profile.

    The New Vocabulary dialog box opens.

  2. Specify a vocabulary name, vocabulary on which it should be based, and a region.

    For more information, click Help.

  3. Click OK

Or

  1. From the DragonBar, select Tools>Vocabulary Center>Manage Vocabularies.

    The Manage Vocabularies dialog box opens.

  2. Click New.

    The New Vocabulary dialog box opens.

  3. Specify the following:

    • Vocabulary name
    • Vocabulary on which the new vocabulary should be based on
    • Region

    For field descriptions, click Help.

  4. Click OK.

To back up your user profile automatically:

Dragon creates a full user profile backup automatically every fifth time your user profile is saved by default.

If your profile is corrupt, Dragon prompts you to automatically restore the last good copy of the profile.

To change your automatic backup frequency, do the following:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Settings>Options.

    The Options dialog box opens.

  2. Click the Data page.
  3. Specify a value for the Automatically back up user profile every n saves option.

    Automatic user profile backups occur every 5 saves by default.

To back up your user profile manually:

You can export your user profile to back it up manually. See the To export your user profile section.

To restore your user profile:

You can import your user profile from a backup to restore it manually. See the To import your user profile section.

To export your user profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Settings>Profile>Manage User Profiles.

    The Manage User Profiles dialog box opens.

  2. Select a user profile.
  3. Select Advanced>Export.

    The Browse for Folder dialog box opens.

  4. Navigate to the folder to which you want to export your user profile.
  5. Click OK.

    The export process begins.

  6. When the process finishes, click OK.
  7. Click Close.

To import your user profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Settings>Profile>Manage User Profiles.

    The Manage User Profiles dialog box opens.

  2. Select Advanced>Import.

    The Browse for Folder dialog box opens.

  3. Navigate to the folder to which you exported your user profile.
  4. Click OK.

    The import process begins.

  5. When the process finishes, click OK.
  6. Click Close.
