Searching the Web

You can use Voice Shortcuts to search the Web by voice. To search the Web, you must have selected the Enable Web search commands option on the Options dialog box—Commands page.

Web search type Examples

General Web search

You don't have to have a browser open to perform a Web search. Dragon opens your default Web browser automatically.

To perform a general Web search:

  1. Say "Search the Web for <search keywords>".

    The Dragon Keyword Edit dialog box opens by default. To turn it off, see To turn off the Keyword Edit dialog box.

  2. Optionally edit your search keywords.
  3. Optionally select Do not display this window again.
  4. Click Search.

    Dragon opens your default browser if it isn't already open and performs the search using your default search engine.

  • "Search the Web for Italian restaurants in Boston."
  • "Search the Web for the closest gas station."

Search a specific Web site

Dragon can search the following Web sites:

  • About.com
  • Google
  • Amazon
  • IRS
  • Answers.com
  • MSN
  • AOL
  • MySpace
  • Bing
  • Wikipedia
  • Creative Commons
  • Yahoo!
  • eBay
  • YouTube

To search a specific Web site:

  1. Say "Search <web site> for <search keywords>".

    The Dragon Keyword Edit dialog box opens by default. To turn it off, see To turn off the Keyword Edit dialog box.

  2. Optionally edit your search keywords.
  3. Optionally select Do not display this window again.
  4. Click Search.

    Dragon opens your default browser if it isn't already open and searches the Web site.

  • "Search eBay for vintage clothing."
  • "Search Bing for movie schedules in Boston."

Search in a specific category

Dragon can search in the following categories:

  • events
  • photos
  • images
  • places
  • maps
  • products
  • movies
  • shops
  • news
  • video
  • pictures
 

To search in a specific category:

  1. Say "Search <category> for <search keywords>".

    The Dragon Keyword Edit dialog box opens by default. To turn it off, see To turn off the Keyword Edit dialog box.

  2. Optionally edit your search keywords.
  3. Optionally select Do not display this window again.
  4. Click Search.

    Dragon opens your default browser if it isn't already open and performs the search using your default search engine.

  • "Search video for dancing bears."
  • "Search images for fall foliage."

Search using dates, times, names, or calculations

Dragon can Help you do research, or even solve a math problem just by searching on the Web. You don't need to say the punctuation when you search using dates, times, names, or calculations.

To search the Web for dates, times, names, or calculations:

  1. Say one of the following:

    • "Search the Web for <date, time, name, or calculation>".
    • "Search <Web site> for <date, time, name, or calculation>".

    The Dragon Keyword Edit dialog box opens by default. To turn it off, see To turn off the Keyword Edit dialog box.

  2. Optionally edit your search keywords.
  3. Optionally select Do not display this window again.
  4. Click Search.

    Dragon opens your default browser if it isn't already open and performs the search using the Web site you specified or your default search engine.

  • "Search the Web for 10:00 AM August 19, 1973."
  • "Search the Web for Leonardo da Vinci."
  • "Search Google for 87 divided by 12."

Search for the top Web site

Dragon can search for the top-ranked Web site for a specific search keyword.

To search for the top Web site:

  1. Say "Open top Web site on <search keyword>".

    The Dragon Keyword Edit dialog box opens by default. To turn it off, see To turn off the Keyword Edit dialog box.

  2. Optionally edit your search keywords.
  3. Optionally select Do not display this window again.
  4. Click Search.

    Dragon performs a search using your default search engine and displays the top result in your default browser.

  • "Open top Web site on beauty products."

To turn off the Keyword Edit dialog box:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Settings>Options.

    The Options dialog box opens.

  2. Click the Commands page.
  3. Deselect the Display search text before performing search check box.
