If performance is slow

Try the following if Dragon's performance is slow.

Divide your document into smaller documents.

If your dictation in Microsoft Word or Corel WordPerfect is slow, try dividing your document into multiple smaller documents. Large documents (50 pages or more) can cause Dragon's performance to slow down. The maximum document size depends on your computer and its resources.

Save, close, and then reopen your document.

If you have been dictating a single document for a long time (for example, for over an hour) and performance becomes slow, save the document, close it, and then reopen it.

In DragonPad, you must open another document or create a new document to close the current document.

Run the Check Microphone wizard.

Check your microphone and sound card by running the Check Microphone wizard. If your audio signal level is low, more memory is used to recognize your speech and Dragon's performance is slower.

For more information, see Performing a microphone check.

Adjust your laptop battery conservation settings.

If Dragon runs more slowly on your laptop when you are using your battery, you may be able to increase performance by adjusting your battery conservation settings, usually found in the Power Properties or Power Options dialog box in the Windows Control Panel.

Delete dictation you no longer need.

Saving your spoken dictation with your document takes up significant disk space. To conserve disk space, delete the .DRA file when you no longer need to hear a playback of your dictation.

Windows does not always show the file extensions for file types that it knows about. For example, it may display your document name as Mydoc, rather than Mydoc.rtf. It will always show the .DRA extension.
