Selecting and deselecting text

When you select specific words and phrases:

  • The Correction menu opens by default.
  • Dragon searches your document from the cursor forward.

To turn off the Correction menu, deselect the "Select" commands bring up Correction menu option on the Options dialog box—Commands page. To allow Select commands to search your document backward, select the "Select" commands search backwards option.

There may be multiple instances of words and phrases that you select. Numbers appear next to each instance. Dragon allows you to perform an action on a single instance, or on all instances. For more information, see Working with multiple text matches.

This topic describes Global Commands that you can use in any application.

When Full Text Control is unavailable, some of the following commands are not applicable. For more information, see About Full Text Control.

To select characters:

Say one of the following:

  • "Select Next Character"
  • "Select Next <1-20> Characters"
  • "Select Forward Character"
  • "Select Forward <1-20> Characters"
  • "Select Previous Character"
  • "Select Previous <1-20> Characters"
  • "Select Back Character"
  • "Select Back <1-20> Characters"
  • "Select Last Character"
  • "Select Last <1-20> Characters"

To select punctuation:

Say "Select" and then the punctuation.

Example: "Select Comma"

To select words:

Say "Select <text>".

Or

Say one of the following:

  • "Select Next Word"
  • "Select Next <1-20> Words"
  • "Select Forward Word"
  • "Select Forward <1-20> Words"
  • "Select Previous Word"
  • "Select Previous <1-20> Words"
  • "Select Back Word"
  • "Select Back <1-20> Words"
  • "Select Last Word"
  • "Select Last <1-20> Words"

To select a phrase or sentences:

Say one of the following:

  • "Select <text> through <text>" (US and Canada only)
  • "Select <text> to <text>" (all other regions)

To select the next occurrence of words or phrases:

Say "Select Again".

Dragon selects the next forward occurrence of the last word or phrase you selected.

To select lines:

Say one of the following:

  • "Select Line"
  • "Select <text>"
  • "Select Next Line"
  • "Select Next <1-20> Lines"
  • "Select Forward Line"
  • "Select Forward <1-20> Lines"
  • "Select Previous Line"
  • "Select Previous <1-20> Lines"
  • "Select Back Line"
  • "Select Back <1-20> Lines"
  • "Select Last Line"
  • "Select Last <1-20> Lines"

To select paragraphs:

  • "Select Paragraph"
  • "Select <text through <text>"
  • "Select Next Paragraph"
  • "Select Next <1-20> Paragraphs"
  • "Select Forward Paragraph"
  • "Select Forward <1-20> Paragraphs"
  • "Select Previous Paragraph"
  • "Select Previous <1-20> Paragraphs"
  • "Select Back Paragraph"
  • "Select Back <1-20> Paragraphs"
  • "Select Last Paragraph"
  • "Select Last <1-20> Paragraphs"

To select all text in the document:

Say "Select Document" or "Select All".

To deselect text:

Say "Unselect That".
