If an error occurs while you are performing a microphone check

This error may occur during the microphone check when you set up your user profile if your microphone becomes disconnected or a problem occurs with your sound card or audio device driver.

  • Ensure your microphone cable isn't damaged and is securely plugged into your computer.
  • Test your Windows sound system by making sure you can hear audio from your speakers or headset when you play music or other audio. To do this, go to the Windows Control Panel and click Sound.

If the above steps don't resolve the problem:

  • Try again with a different microphone. If the sound quality improves, your first microphone may be damaged.
  • If your microphone connects to a mic-in jack and your computer has jacks in both the front and back, connect your microphone to the back.
  • If you are using a sound card, try reinstalling the sound system software.
  • If you are not already using a USB microphone, try switching to one. USB microphones don't rely on your computer's sound card, so they can bypass sound card problems.
  • Try recording your voice outside of Dragon by using the Windows Sound Recorder. If this also fails, you probably have a hardware problem with your microphone, computer, or sound card and should contact the appropriate manufacturer.
