About user profiles

About

A user profile is a set of files that Dragon uses to process what you say. Your user profile stores information, like the type of microphone you use and your custom words.

About transcription user profiles

A transcription user profile is a profile with limited functionality that you use for transcribing recordings of another person's speech, like a lecturer or a field inspector.

About default user profiles

A default user profile is a profile that Dragon loads by default each time it starts. This applies only when you have multiple user profiles.

About dynamic user profiles

A dynamic user profile is a new profile that Dragon creates automatically when Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled and you log in to Dragon on a different computer where you have not yet created a user profile. This allows you to dictate on any Windows computer without having to run through the New User wizard on that computer. Dragon creates the user profile using the settings saved with the original user profile.

Dynamic user profiles are available only in Dragon editions where:

  • Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled.
  • Users log in to more than one computer.
  • The Roaming feature is disabled.

There is no manual setup or configuration required for dynamic user profiles.

Comparison: Dynamic user profiles and Roaming user profiles

Both Roaming user profiles and dynamic user profiles allow users to dictate with Dragon on different computers. However, you can use only one in your Dragon environment. Use the following table to determine which type best suits your needs.

For more information on Roaming user profiles, see About Roaming user profiles.

For more information on setting up the Roaming feature, see Roaming feature setup checklist.

Dynamic user profiles Roaming user profiles
  • Can be used only when Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled.
  • Can be used when Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled and also when it is disabled.
  • No setup required.
  • Setup and configuration is required.
  • Each user can have only a single user profile per language/region.
  • Each user can have multiple Roaming user profiles, regardless of whether Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled or disabled.

Optional?

No.

Number to create

One per region if you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled.

One or more if you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode).

You should create multiple user profiles if:

  • You dictate in different locations with different acoustic conditions.
  • Two or more users need to use Dragon on the same computer.
  • You dictate in multiple languages.
  • You need to transcribe several recordings of another person's speech.

You can export your vocabulary, custom words, and custom commands from one user profile and import them into another. You can also export your user profile and use it on another computer.

Maximum allowed

One per region if you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled.

Unlimited if you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode).

Language requirements

You can create different user profiles for the languages in which you dictate. You must have selected those languages during the Dragon installation. You can install the languages later from the Dragon installation CD or setup.exe file.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode), you can create multiple user profiles for different languages and regions. Each user profile for editions in Standalone mode can have only one assigned language. To use multiple languages, you must create multiple user profiles.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, you select the language and region for your user profile after you log in. You can have a single user profile for each region.

Disk space requirements

Each user profile requires about 127 MB of hard disk space.

Dictation sources/Audio devices

You can use one or more audio devices with each user profile. Choose from the following:

  • Headsets
  • Hand-held microphones
  • Digital recorders (for transcription)
  • The Nuance PowerMic

For more information, see About microphones and other dictation sources

Backups

User profiles store important data. To avoid loss or corruption, you should back up your user profile manually or automatically on a regular basis. Automatic user profile backups occur every fifth time you save your profile by default.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode), you can configure automatic backup frequency on the Options dialog box—Data page.

You can back up your user profile manually by selecting Settings>Profile>Back up User Profile or Settings>Profile>Manage User Profiles>Advanced>Backup.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, your Dragon administrator configures your automatic backup frequency in the NMC console. To back up your user profile manually, you can export it.

Accuracy tuning

From the DragonBar, select Tools>Accuracy Center>Launch Accuracy Tuning. For more information, see About Accuracy Tuning.

You can also schedule Accuracy Tuning to run at a convenient time. For more information, see Scheduling Accuracy Tuning in Administrative Settings or Scheduling Accuracy Tuning with the Acoustic Optimizer Scheduler.

Storage

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode), user profiles are stored by default in:

C:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking15\Users

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled, user profiles are stored by default in:

C:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking15\Users\[NMSUser_GUID]

where NMSUser_GUID is the user's login name.
