Nuance Communications in the Spotlight at CES 2008
Nuance Solutions Expected to be Featured in More Than 100 Consumer Products – from Phones and Navigation Devices to Cars and Games – on Display at CES 2008
CES 2008, Las Vegas, January 7, 2008 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN), a leading provider of speech solutions, will be a prominent force at CES 2008, featured in some of the most exciting and innovative consumer devices available on the market today, including mobile handsets, personal navigation devices (PNDs), in-vehicle entertainment systems, gaming consoles and desktop dictation software. The company expects that more than 100 Nuance®-enriched products and services from many of today’s most recognized companies, including Ford, Nokia, Palm, RIM, and TomTom, will be on display in multiple vendor booths and meeting rooms at CES 2008, taking place January 7-10 in Las Vegas.
The proliferation of consumer devices and an explosion of mobile content and services have created unprecedented demand for efficient, natural, convenient and safe ways for consumers to interact with their devices, opening the door for Nuance to deliver its speech and predictive text solutions that bring the usability improvements across many applications. Whether embedded on the device or distributed across a wireless network, speech and predictive text technologies from Nuance provide a solution to traditional mobile constraints such as small keyboards and tiny screens.
“The most exciting element of CES every year is discovering how favorite consumer devices have evolved and what the hot device of the new year will be,” said Steve Chambers, president, mobile and consumer division, Nuance. “As in many of today’s phones, cars and games, voice and text input capabilities are powerful tools that help consumers quickly and safely access information and controls. In conjunction with CES 2008, we’ve seen myriad products and services announced that feature Nuance-enabled capabilities in the hottest wireless handsets, PNDs, in-vehicle entertainment, navigation systems, and game consoles.”
Speech and human language has evolved significantly from its rudimentary beginnings where cavemen told stories around the fire, eventually becoming the written word. As the world has seen technology grow beyond what many thought was possible, we have become accustomed to advanced technology enabling us to be more efficient and better enjoy our daily lives from our mobile phones and text messaging to climate controlled cars and navigation systems.
Nuance is bringing mobile input technologies full circle, understanding that the power of the human voice and keystroke reduction will continue to be key factors in communicating and accomplishing tasks quickly and more efficiently, in many of today’s hottest product categories on display at CES 2008, including:
- In-Vehicle Entertainment and Information – Today, the world’s top ten car makers each are working with Nuance to change the way people use navigation systems, digital music players and mobile phones in their vehicles. With high-profile deployments in Mercedes-Benz vehicles and the new Ford SYNC system being showcased at CES, Nuance is helping deliver safety and convenience for millions of drivers that want to use voice for controlling in-dash navigation, searching playlists on music players, dialing phones and accessing online services.
- Mobile Phones and Information Services – Nuance voice solutions have shipped in more than 250 million mobile devices, with that number expected to top one billion within a few years. In addition, Nuance expects its T9® predictive text software will ship on more than 700 million units. Nuance is working closely with each of the world’s premier handset manufacturers to deliver speech and text capabilities for phone dialing, information search, text messaging and MP3 control in many of today’s hottest phones. In addition, Nuance has teamed with firms that include AT&T, Google, RIM, Sprint and Verizon to launch voice search and connected information services to millions of mobile subscribers around the world.
- Personal Navigation Devices (PNDs) – As seen this holiday season, PNDs have become a must-have device for many consumers as they navigate from point A to point B. Nuance is working with the world’s premier PND providers, as well as many consumer electronic companies adding navigation capabilities to devices. At CES 2008, many of the newest devices being showcased include rich voice capabilities from Nuance that let drivers keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road by simply speaking their destination and hearing turn-by-turn directions. In particular, Nuance has recently been profiled in the new, popular TomTom Go devices on display and announced at CES 2008.
