Working with user profiles

A user profile is a set of files that Dragon uses to process what you say. Your user profile stores information, like the type of microphone you use, custom words, and vocabularies.

This topic describes non-Roaming user profiles. For information on working with Roaming user profiles, see Working with Roaming user profiles.

To upgrade your user profile:

Nuance Management Center/NMS mode disabled (Standalone mode)

If you upgraded manually from version 12, you must create a new user profile after upgrading. Dragon cannot upgrade your existing version 12 user profile.

If you upgraded automatically, Dragon upgrades your user profiles the first time you open them after upgrading Dragon. If you chose not to upgrade your profiles, you can upgrade them later by selecting Dragon>Dragon Tools>Upgrade User Profiles (Windows 7) or Dragon>Upgrade User Profiles (Windows 8.1 and 10) from the Windows Start menu.

Nuance Management Center/NMS mode enabled

The New User wizard appears when you launch Dragon after upgrading. You can do one of the following:

  • Create a new user profile.
  • Use an existing user profile.

To create a new user profile, run through the New User wizard.

To use an existing user profile, do the following:

  1. Close the New User wizard.
  2. In the Administrative settings, deselect the Enable NMS option.

For more information, see the Administrative Settings dialog box—NMS Settings tab.

  3. Upgrade your user profile. From the Windows Start menu, select one of the following:

    • Dragon>Dragon Tools>Upgrade User Profiles (Windows 7)
    • Dragon>Upgrade User Profiles (Windows 8.1 and 10)
  4. Select the user profile to upgrade.

If you have more than one profile, select only one per region. You can only use a single user profile per region with Nuance Management Center/NMS mode enabled.

  5. Run through the User Profile Upgrade wizard.

Dragon creates your upgraded user profile in the C:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking15\Users directory.

  6. In the Administrative settings, select the Enable NMS option to re-enable Nuance Management Center/NMS mode.

For more information, see the Administrative Settings dialog box—NMS Settings tab.

  7. Import the upgraded user profile into the C:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking15\Users\[NMSUser_GUID] directory, where [NMSUser_GUID] is your Dragon login.

For more information, see To import your user profile:.

  8. Click Yes if a user profile already exists in the folder and Dragon prompts you to replace it.

To reset your user profile:

You reset your user profile when you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is enabled and Dragon saved changes to your user profile that you didn't want, or when your user profile becomes corrupted. When you reset your user profile, Dragon deletes your user profile and all of its data, including your vocabulary. Dragon then recreates a clean user profile using the same language, region, and audio settings from your original profile. If you had more than one vocabulary, Dragon creates a single vocabulary for your user profile.

Do the following to reset your user profile:

  1. From the DragonBar, select Settings>Profile>Reset.

    A prompt appears.

  2. Click Yes.

Dragon deletes and recreates your user profile.

If you are using a Dragon edition where Nuance Management Center/NMS mode is disabled (Standalone mode), see To restore your user profile for information on restoring your user profile.
