Creating a custom command for license plate and VIN dictation

Your officers can dictate license plates by using either the "Enter Plate" and "Exit Plate" commands, or by using a custom command to enable Plate mode. They can also dictate Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) by using either the "Enter VIN" and "Exit VIN" commands, or by using a custom command. The standard "Enter Plate" and "Enter VIN" commands provided with Dragon simply enable Plate mode. The "End Plate" and "Enter VIN" commands allow Dragon to exit Plate mode. You might create a custom command to include additional actions, like opening the plate or VIN lookup software, as part of the command. You might also include an action that allows Dragon to exit Plate mode after the command is spoken. For information on the actions that allow Dragon to exit Plate mode, see Dictating license plates and VINs.

You create custom commands:

  • In the MyCommands Editor (Tools>Command Center>Add New Command), or
  • From the Manage Custom Commands dialog box (Tools>Command Center>Manage Custom Commands).

Use the following procedures to create two sample custom commands to enable Plate mode dictation, perform a plate lookup, and then submit the plate. These commands assume that officers have their license plate lookup software open when they execute the commands. For more information on steps, see MyCommands Editor—Step-by-Step dialog box.

Executing the sample commands

You can first test the commands in Microsoft Word to ensure they work correctly before dictating in your license plate lookup software.

  1. Log in to your Dragon client.
  2. Open Microsoft Word, or your license plate lookup software.
  3. Turn Dragon's microphone on.
  4. Say "Run Plate".
  5. Dictate a license plate using the NATO alphabet or custom phonetic alphabet your site uses.

You can dictate up to seventeen letters, numbers, and symbols in one utterance. To dictate plates without a character limitation, pause between phonetic characters.

  6. Say "Submit Plate".
