Working on your Desktop

You can use voice commands to perform many actions on the Windows Desktop. For a list of commands you can use, say "What Can I Say?" at any time.

Windows desktop sample commands

To show the Desktop:

Use these commands to minimize all open windows and show your Desktop.

Say one of the following:

  • "Show Desktop"
  • "Minimize All Windows"

To open a list of Desktop commands:

Say "What Can I Say?".

To work with Virtual Desktops in Windows 10:

Virtual desktops are a feature introduced by Microsoft in Windows 10.

To create, close, or switch virtual desktops, say:

  • "Create new virtual desktop"
  • "Add desktop"
  • "Switch to next virtual desktop"
  • "Close this virtual desktop"

To open Windows folders:

Say one of the following:

  • "Open My Computer"
  • "Open My Documents"
  • "Open My Pictures"
  • "Open My Music"

To open Windows utilities:

Say one of the following:

  • "Open Windows Explorer"
  • "Open Windows Help"
  • "Open Task Manager"
  • "Open Run Dialog"
  • "Open Control Panel"
  • "Open Print Manager"
  • "Open Add or Remove Programs"
  • "Display Notification Center" (Windows 10)
  • "Open Task View" (Windows 10)

To change Windows settings:

Say one of the following:

  • "Change Display Settings"
  • "Change Screen Resolution"
  • "Change Power Settings"

In Windows 10, you can also say:

  • "Start Windows settings."
  • "Start PC settings."
  • "Start Windows settings."

To switch between open windows and programs:

Do one of the following:

  1. Say one of the following:

    • "List All Windows"
    • "List Programs"

    The List of Open Windows dialog box opens.

  2. Say "Choose <number>".

    Dragon changes focus to the window or program you choose.

Or

Say one of the following:

  • "Switch to Previous Window"
  • "Switch to Next Window"

To switch to a specific program:

Say "Switch to <program name>"

To switch between open documents:

Use this procedure to switch between documents open in the same application.

Do one of the following:

  1. Say "List Windows for <program name>".

    The List of Windows - <program name> dialog box opens.

  2. Say "Choose <number>".

    Dragon changes focus to the document you choose.

Or

Say "Switch to <document name>".

To scroll in windows:

Say one of the following:

  • "Page Up"
  • "Move Down <number of lines>"
  • "Page Down"
  • "Move Left <number of characters>"
  • "Move Up <number of lines>"
  • "Move Right <number of characters>"

To maximize a window:

Say "Maximize Window".

To minimize a window:

Say "Minimize Window".

To close a window:

Say "Close Window".

If the window is not active, say "Mouse Click" to give the window focus. Then, say "Close Window".

To restore a window:

Say "Restore Window".
