What's new

Command enhancements

• You can now say "Show Links" to see all links on a Web page that you can click by voice.

Dictation enhancements

Closing the Dictation Box

When a user attempts to close the Dictation Box, and the Dictation Box contains text, Dragon displays a message that asks the user to confirm that they want to close the Dictation Box.

PowerMic III support

Dragon now supports the PowerMic III.

The Numbers and Units page includes two new options:

• Format cranial nerve numbers using Roman numerals: Inserts cranial nerve numbers using Roman numerals. For example, “Cranial nerve VI” instead of “Cranial nerve six”.
• Enable numbered list formatting: Applies formatting to items in a numbered list. For formatting options, see Format of each item in a numbered list.

Numbers

• When there is a leading zero in a decimal number, you can dictate the zero using "oh".

  Example: 0.5

  Say: "oh point five"

Street addresses

• You can dictate addresses with a hyphen or dash.

  Example: 12-14 Maple Street

  Say: "twelve dash fourteen maple street"

• Dragon now supports full addresses (street address, state/province/territory/county, and postal code).

Time

• You can now dictate minutes before an hour using "to", "of", and "til".

  Example: 4:45

  Say: "quarter of five"

• You can now dictate minutes after an hour using "past" and "after".

  Example: 5:15

  Say: "quarter past five"

Usability enhancements

Accuracy improvement without reading text

In previous Dragon versions, you could read sample text for several minutes to improve Dragon's accuracy. In version 15, you can achieve the same result by simply dictating for several minutes, making corrections, and then running Accuracy Tuning (Tools>Accuracy Center>Launch Accuracy Tuning). As a result of this improvement, the Audio>Read text to improve accuracy menu option has been removed.

Simplified Audio Setup

Dragon now detects audio devices better. In most cases, when Dragon shows the list of detected devices, you choose a device.

Important: Using more than one input device is now done by selecting Choose Microphone from the Settings>Microphone menu.

Shorter Profile Creation Process

When creating a user profile, you no longer adapt a vocabulary based on documents and sent emails. You can launch the analysis of documents and emails after you create a profile.

Vocabulary editor search

The Vocabulary Editor now has a Search field and lets you search on more than just written forms. Also, it makes it easy to add a custom Dictation Command.

Web experience

The Dragon Web extension now gives Full Text Control in Chrome and Internet Explorer, in most websites. To use Dragon in the supported browsers, you must enable this add-on.

There are some differences in functionality between browsers.

Dragon Web Extension Disabled notification

Dragon now notifies you automatically when the Dragon Web Extension is no longer installed or enabled. A message appears when you open your browser.

The message appears only if you did not select the Do not show tips check box on the Options dialog box—Appearance page.

Interactive Tutorial now Web-based

When you are connected to the internet, Dragon now includes a Web-based interactive tutorial. If you don't have an internet connection, the tutorial runs locally. The tutorial includes progressive simulations that help you learn Dragon skills.

Learn from specific documents words now deselected

When you run the Learn from specific documents tool, the words that Dragon finds are now deselected by default. You select the words that you want Dragon to add to your vocabulary.

Options dialog box changes

• The tabs in the Options dialog box are now pages that appear in a vertical list for easier usability. You can select the pages by voice.

• The following changes have been made to the View page:
  • The tab is now named Appearance.

• The following changes have been made to the Hot keys page:

  • There is a new Rewind hot key that allows you to rewind playback.
  • There is a new Fast-Forward hot key that allows you fast forward playback.

• You can navigate between Options dialog box pages by voice.

• On the Miscellaneous page, the Launch Dragon in QuickStart mode when Windows starts option has been renamed to Launch Dragon when Windows starts.

Performance improvements

To eliminate confusion on the appropriate vocabulary type or acoustic speech model to use, the Advanced button has been removed from the Speech Options page of the New User wizard.

Simplified DragonBar

The new DragonBar is simpler and smaller than the classic DragonBar, using less real estate on your screen. Its menu structure has been condensed into two main menus, making it easier to locate the functionality you need.

The classic Dragonbar is still available.

Simplified microphone selection

It's now simpler and easier to select an audio device to use with Dragon. The Choose an audio device page now displays only audio devices that are available. Dragon detects devices that are plugged into your computer and usable based on your system volume meter.

In addition, you can now choose an audio device by selecting Settings>Microphone>Choose Microphone from the DragonBar. You no longer need to add a dictation source to use an audio device.

To make it simple to choose the right device, the Other audio input pane has been removed from the following pages:

• From Settings>Microphone>Choose Microphone dialog page

Touch screen improvements

When you're using Dragon on a Windows tablet, you can now touch anywhere outside Dragon's microphone to expand the DragonBar when it is collapsed.

Discontinued functionality

Dragon no longer supports the following functionality:

• Auto-punctuation support: The 'Automatically add commas and periods' option
• BestMatch V acoustic models
• Dragon Remote Microphone

• Firefox

Upgrade instructions

Dragon supports upgrades only from the following versions and editions listed. Dragon does not support upgrades from any other versions or editions. If you have any other version or edition installed, you must first uninstall your existing version prior to installing Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 4.

Upgrading to Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 4

Before you begin

If you are using the Roaming feature, you must first upgrade your Roaming user profiles before upgrading client computers. For instructions, see Working with Roaming user profiles.

Upgrading Dragon automatically

For automatic upgrades, Dragon updates your software automatically. You do not need to uninstall your existing version first. Dragon also retains your user profiles, custom words, and commands.

1. Close any open programs.
2. If you’re running an anti-virus program, turn it off until the installation completes.
3. Do one of the following:
   Insert the DVD. The installation begins immediately. If the installation does not start automatically, run setup.exe from the DVD.
   or
   Browse to the area where you downloaded Dragon and double-click setup.exe to run it.
   

4. Install the Microsoft .NET Framework if prompted.

You may need to restart the computer after installing the .NET Framework.

5. In the Dragon InstallShield wizard, click Next to begin the Dragon installation.
6. Read the license terms and click the radio button to indicate you agree to the terms.
7. Click Next to proceed to the next screen.
8. Enter or confirm your customer information.
9. Enter your serial number, and click Next.
10. Select a set up type and installation directory.
11. Click Next.
12. If you selected Custom, choose the program features to install. Click Next.
13. Click Install.

The installation begins.

14. After the installation process is complete, click Finish.
15. Follow the steps to activate Dragon.

Upgrading Dragon manually

If you're upgrading manually from Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 2, and you want to keep your custom words, you must:

1. Export your Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 2 user profile.
2. Uninstall Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 2.
3. Install Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 4.
4. Import the Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 2 profile into version Dragon Medical Practice Edition4.

Note: Upgrading a custom vocabulary from Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 2 to Dragon Medical Practice Edition 4 requires the custom vocabulary to be present in Dragon Medical Practice Edition 4.

Locating your serial number

To upgrade Dragon, the serial number for your existing Dragon installation is required. Do one of the following to locate your serial number:

• From the DragonBar in your Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 2 installation, click the Help icon () and then select About Dragon.

  The serial number appears on the screen.

• If you purchased a DVD, your serial number is located on the back of the Dragon DVD sleeve.
• If you purchased the download, you receive a confirmation email from Nuance. Your serial number is located in both the .CSV file and the .HTML file attached to the email.

Activating Dragon

With certain Dragon editions, the first time you start Dragon after upgrading, you are prompted to activate the product. If you skip activation, you can launch Dragon in Trial mode five times. After five launches, you must activate Dragon to continue using the product.

These instructions assume you have an internet connection available on the computer where you upgraded Dragon.

1. Launch Dragon.
2. Select Activate Product, and then click Next.
3. One of the following actions occur:
   • If you upgraded from Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 2 with Smart serial number, Dragon automatically:
     • fills the top field with your Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 4 serial number
     • fills the bottom field with your Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 2 serial number
   • If you installed Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 4 or upgraded from Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 2 with Full serial number, Dragon automatically:
     • fills the top field with your version Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 4 serial number
     • hides the bottom field.
       
   • If you installed Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 4 with Smart serial number, Dragon automatically:
     • fills the top field with your Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 4 serial number
     • does not fill the bottom field with your Dragon Medical Practice Edition version 2 serial number (you need to specify it manually).
       
4. Click Next to continue.
5. Click Finish. Dragon is activated.

Known issues

Issue	Description
Recognition and playback issues with latest Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop versions running on Windows Server 2016	Issues in Xenapp and XenDesktop optimized mode include: Poor recognition Audio may stutter during playback Playback speed may increase unexpectedly These issues are caused by compatibility issues between Citrix and Windows Server 2016. No issues on Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012. No issues on Windows Server 2016 on XenDesktop in generic mode.
The PowerMic does not turn on after being disconnected from the computer	A user uses Dragon with XenDesktop 7.13 or newer. The user disconnects the PowerMic from the USB port. The user reconnects the PowerMic to the USB port. Dragon displays the message 'The Audio device is not working'. The microphone hot key and microphone icon do not turn the PowerMic on. Workarounds: Use generic mode, set under Manage devices on the Citrix server, rather than “optimized” mode Turn the mike on by pressing the microphone button on the PowerMic.
On Citrix Xenapp a large black frame displays around the Dragonbar	Dragon is set to use the modern DragonBar. A user starts Dragon. The DragonBar appears in a black UI frame. Workaround: Use the classic DragonBar.
On Citrix XenApp, you are not warned if the PowerMic extensions are not installed on either the Citrix server or the Citrix client.	When the Citrix PowerMic extensions are missing on the server or the client, you can still create a PowerMic profile. However, you cannot turn the microphone on when loading the profile. You will see the error message “ the audio device is not responding…”.
The PowerMic microphone does not turn on after it is unplugged from a computer when “automatically adjust the microphone level as I speak” is turned off	A user creates a profile with the PowerMic microphone. Dragon is running on the computer. The microphone is on or in sleep mode. The user unplugs the microphone. Dragon shows the microphone as Off. The user plugs the microphone back into the computer. The user cannot turn the microphone back on in Dragon. Workaround: Use the Select Language dialog box to reload the user profile. (Settings>Profile>Select Language)
Dragon hangs when you disconnnect the PowerMic microphone from the usb port	Dragon is on and a PowerMic microphone is connected to the computer via a usb port. The microphone is on or in sleep mode. A user disconnects the microphone from the usb port while Dragon is recognizing speech or there is background noise. Dragon hangs and the DragonBar items become unresponsive. Workaround: Turn the microphone off before you unplug the microphone from the USB port.
Issue with commands like “Delete first paragraph” or 'Select first paragraph' command when multiple documents are open in Microsoft Word 2016	More than one document is open in Microsoft Word 2016. A user dictates text into a Word document. The user switches to a different Word document. The user says 'Select first paragraph'. Dragon selects text in the first Word document. This issue only occurs if multiple Word documents are open in different Word processes. Example: MS Word has not started and a user opens multiple Word documents simultaneously from Windows Explorer. Workaround: Open MS Word documents within the same instance of MS Word. Example: With MS Word open, use the File menu to open multiple Word files.
English Medical vocabularies do not contain no-space-on and no-space-off commands	After dictating text into an application, you use the no-space-on or no-space-off inline-commands. Dragon does not recognize the commands. The commands do not function as expected.   Workaround 1: To remove all spaces between the words of the last utterance, after dictating text, select the dictation text and say "Compound That".   Workaround 2: To remove all spaces between the words of the last utterance, when dictating text, follow this pattern: say <word1> no space <word2> no space <word n>. Example: Say "Big", say "No space", say "Sale", say "No space", say "Today", say "period".
Columns do not update after upgrading Windows 10 and running Acoustic Optimizer Scheduler tasks	When you upgrade to Windows 10 Anniversary edition and tasks are scheduled and performed with the Acoustic Optimizer Scheduler (ACOS), the Last Run Time column and the Last Result column are not updated. Workaround: Use the Windows Task Scheduler to view accurate information: Click the Windows Start button. In the Search field, type "Task Scheduler". The Task Scheduler opens. In the left pane, click the Task Scheduler Library folder. Find the optimization task created by the Acoustic and Language Model Optimizer Scheduler. The task name is prefixed by NatSpeak_Optimizer_. If there are several optimization tasks present, it's helpful to look at the task's triggers, or at other tasks. View the Last Run Time column and the Last Result column.
The Upgrade tool does not upgrade a profile when nsadmin added the vocabulary	In Dragon Medical Practice Edition (DMPE), version 2, a user uses nsadmin to add a vocabulary to a profile. The user exports the user profile. In Dragon Medical Practice Edition, version 4, on a different computer, the user opens the Upgrade dialog box. The user selects the version 2 profile and starts the upgrade process. Result: The upgrade tool cannot upgrade the profile. The tool shows the Error message: ‘ERROR: None of the topics is upgradable’.   Workaround: Create a DMPE 4 custom vocabulary. Use the Upgrade dialog box to upgrade the DMPE 2 or 3 custom vocabulary to DMPE 4.
On certain laptops, like the Microsoft Surface 3, the microphone may randomly turn off	You connect a USB external microphone to a Dragon workstation. When the system is low on resources, the built-in microphone “pulses”, sending a microphone event to the system. This may cause Dragon to turn the microphone off – even if the microphone is an external microphone. Workaround: Disable the built-in audio subsystem.
Certain fields and edit controls do not support dictation in Internet Explorer 11	Dragon does not insert text into certain Internet Explorer 11 fields and edit controls, despite showing the ‘Full Text Control” indicator. For example, the issue occurs when dictating into the Gmail subject field in the Internet Explorer 11 browser.
